United Methodists turn to Ted

As the California-Nevada Annual Conference began a communications transition in January 1999, the Conference shifted to a series of "interim editors" for the Conference's long-time bi-weekly newspaper.

The Communications Committee assigned a four-month stint to Ted in late August of 1999, to prepare for the September 3 edition. The Committee extended the "interim" editorship three more times, a sign of the trust and confidence the Committee and readers expressed.

As editor, Ted marshalled contributions from professional and non professional writers and photographers, crafting them into well strucured stories relevant to building and keeping faith among a diverse church.

More than 27 years of news gathering and polishing experience, coupled well with Ted's multi-media background. His skills kept a balance between hard news and uplifting features during newsy, controversial and exciting times for the denomination's 90,000 members in the Conference.

Extensive use of the internet and e-mail during his tenure enabled the print and web editions he pioneered to contain timely, breaking news and pictures. General Conference votes of high interest in California and Nevada were delivered promptly to readers. So was Jurisdictional election news, including the selection of a new Bishop for the Conference.

Working from a design prepared by the San Francisco Examiner's Paul Hilton, Ted guided the Review through more than a year of ongoing content improvement, and technological development with PDF versions and web editions as reflected in the final issues showcased from the links below.

The PDF files will give you an idea of what the print versions looked like, while the web editions often contain more information and definitely more pictures than the print editions had space to include.
